"Thomas A. Edison.  A Tribune Correspondent Visits Him at Menlo Park--Some of His Recent Extraordinary Discoveries and Inventions," Chicago Tribune, May 4, 1878.  Special Correspondence of The Tribune, by George H. Bliss.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa., May 5.-- The City of Rio de Janeiro, the first of John Roach's Brazilian line of steamers, which sailed from New York yesterday, took out one of Edison's phonographs, a present from Mr. Roach to Dom Pedro, Emperor of Brazil.  The phonograph was charged before its departure with the delivery of an address from Mr. Roach to the Emperor, with compliments and congratulations in view of the establishment of the new line.  This is the first instance of the use of a phonograph for such a purpose.
